Representing Jones Act Seaman Who Nearly Lost His Foot

-
Arnold & Itkin

Led by Cory Itkin, Arnold & Itkin’s maritime attorneys recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Jones Act seaman from New York. This case was filed in Broward County, Florida.

This once active and healthy man was working on the Makushin Bay off the coast of Unalaska, Alaska, when suddenly, a mooring line wrapped around his foot due to the defendants’ inadequate safety policies and procedures. Due to the incident, our client sustained severe injuries to his foot that nearly necessitated an amputation.

The Jones Act is a legal remedy available to many maritime workers who have suffered due to the negligence of someone else on the crew, the shipowner, or an employer. Under the Jones Act, the injured worker can recover compensation for medical bills, disability, past and future income losses, lost earning capacity, physical pain and suffering, and much more.

A maritime lawyer on the case said, “When vessel owners and operators do not make safety their number one priority, catastrophic injuries like this one are inevitable. We look forward to holding the defendants accountable for their actions, no matter what.”
