The Hess Corporation, a leading global independent energy company, is one of the top deepwater operators in the Gulf of Mexico. It also produces and supplies natural gas in Malaysia and Thailand and is involved in exploration operations off the coasts of Guyana and Suriname. The Hess Corporation also has an onshore operations division that oversees unconventional oil and gas production.
Hess Corporation started in 1933 as a delivery truck service that hauled gallons of oil, which grew into a fleet of oil-delivering trucks. It bought its first sea vessel in 1948, a tanker weighing 10,000 tons. In the decades to follow, the company started a refinery and opened a gas station in New Jersey. In 1969, it merged with Amerada Petroleum, which brought with it such assets as oil fields in North Dakota and Alaska. The newly formed Amerada Hess started operations in the Gulf of Mexico in 1972, expanding to the North Sea and Asia Pacific in the 1990s. In 2006, it changed its name to Hess Corporation. By 2014, the company had transitioned to an exploration and production corporation.
